Triple Olympic-World Boxing Champion Teofilo Stevenson Dies.

Former Cuban boxer Teofilo Stevenson, three-time Olympic and World heavyweight champion, is honored today in this capital after his death, victim of a heart attack at the age of 60.

Cuban mass media have devoted main spaces to remember the Cuban boxer, a legend of the ring, for many people the best amateur boxer in history, who died on Monday.

His 302 wins in 321 fights, among them those in which he won gold in the Olympic games held in 1972 in Munich, followed by the victories in 1976 at Montreal and in 1980 in Moscow, as well as the world championships in 1974 in Havana, 1978 in Belgrade, and 1986 in Reno, were also highlighted.

“Hasta siempre campeon” (To Always Champion) headlines Granma newspaper, while Radio Rebelde station posted in its website “Fallecio Teofilo Stevenson, gloria del deporte cubano” (Cuban Sports Glory Teofilo Stevenson Dies).

Cubadebate website spread the news that mourns the Cuban and world sporting family.

Champion with a devastating right hand, Stevenson deserved national and international recognition due to his results as one of the best athletes of the 20th century.
